When I went to see her, she was curled up in the Rubbermaid tub in her kennel, glaring out. Cream: 16 oz of heavy whipping cream, 16 oz mascarpone cheese, 6T powdered sugar, 1.5t of vanilla extract. Beat cream until thick, add cheese, sugar, vanilla, beat till smooth. Load into piping bag.
I also needed another 8 oz. of whipping cream, 0.5t of vanilla, and 2T of sugar to top them off.
Pipe about an inch into tom collins glass. line the glass above the cream with thinly sliced strawberries, fill in with mixed berreis of your choice (black, blue, and raspberries in my case). Pipe another inch of cream, line with thin-sliced kiwi (sliced in half additionally here) fill with remaining berries. Top with cream (in my case, the second batch sans mascarpone) and garnish with half-strawberry and mint leaf. If you would like to know the difference between a parent and a non-parent, look at the reaction to this picture. A non-parent will respond with an appreciative cooing or perhaps just kind indifference. After all, who has not seen a million pictures of babies doing cute things? A parent looks at a picture like this with a genuine, unabashed smile, but their feelings are clouded a bit with a certain sadness, well, perhaps more of a longing than a sadness. Some of it is an appreciation for the forty minutes of strategic pacifier engagement and tummy rubbing it took to get to this scene of contentment. But more of it is the subtle contrast between the joys of parenting, and the common joys of adult life.
The list of Things You Give Up when you become a parent is long, and well-known, including things like:
• Sleep as you knew it
• The ability to eat out because you want to
• Driving a car with an empty trunk
• Smelling like yourself
and, of course:
• A sense of what is gross
The list of Thing You Gain is a lot more nebulous, and, honestly, a pretty hard sell in comparison to its predecessor. Sure, there is the simple joy of a person who depends, loves, and trusts you completely, and the strange involuntary way in which you feel whatever your child feels. (To test this, hold a baby long enough for her to burst out into a smile at something you did. If you don’t smile back, this is like not crying during “Old Yeller.”) A lot of people try to compare the joy of parenting to the joys of affluent adult life, and the phrase “apples and oranges” doesn’t begin to cover it. “Apples and hammers” is a bit closer to the mark, really. But there is a major secret to difference that has nothing to do with magnitude or mixing of emotions, and it was something that struck me as I was maneuvering the camera on my forehead to take this picture.
The biggest difference in parenting is the tremendous transience of what you experience. As a non-parent, there is a comforting regularity to your life. Every week you go to the same places, and do the same things for fun. Every Saturday I played poker with the same group of people and we always had a great time, and this was as predictable as the tides. But, as a parent, every thing you experience is so precious, because it is all going away. I am holding my baby, who turned two months old yesterday, in one arm, and her favorite game is “Stick My Tongue Out, And You Stick Yours Out Back.” She was twenty and a half inches when she was born, twenty one at one month, and she is twenty four now. Soon she won’t fit on my arm, and she won’t want to take a nap three times a day.
In many ways, that is the sadness that both colors and enriches the joys of parenting. Having moments that you want to last, possibly even forever, if you could arrange such a thing, and knowing that they cannot last, and they cannot even be replicated. But this is The Way Parenting Changes, more than anything else. This sudden awareness of how temporary everything is, forever changes the way in what you perceive not your child, or even joy itself, but your world in its entirety.
